Families often focus first on the money required for release. The written conditions deserve equal attention. A person can leave custody and still have reporting obligations, restrictions on contact or travel, and future court appearances. The exact order, rather than a general description of how bonds work, should guide the next steps.

In this guide

Separate the different arrangements

Texas law recognizes personal bonds and bail bonds, including cash and surety arrangements. A commercial surety agreement can involve contractual fees and obligations that differ from a cash deposit with the court. Eligibility, the amount, and release conditions depend on applicable law and the judicial decision. Do not assume that every person can select any bond option or that paying a commercial fee resolves the criminal case.

Collect the complete release packet

Keep the court’s conditions, bond paperwork, reporting instructions, receipts, and upcoming appearance notices together. Read names, case numbers, and effective dates. If there are several cases, there may be several sets of requirements. Ask counsel to explain anything unclear before relying on a verbal summary. A receipt from a bonding company does not show all the obligations imposed by a court.

Turn the conditions into a schedule

Depending on the order, supervision may involve check-ins, testing, monitoring, treatment, or other requirements. Harris County Pretrial Services supervises court-ordered conditions in cases assigned to it. Record the required contact method and deadlines from your own instructions. Work shifts and transportation problems should be raised promptly with counsel and the appropriate supervising office; silence will not explain a missed obligation.

Request changes through the proper process

A change in employment, housing, or family arrangements may make an existing condition difficult to follow. Give counsel the specific facts and ask whether a request for modification is appropriate. A lawyer’s request is not itself permission to depart from an order. Follow the current requirements until an authorized change is made, and retain a copy of any amended order.

Keep financial and court records separate

Maintain a record of payments and the agreement with any surety, but also keep an independent calendar of court appearances. Ask how refunds, fees, or collateral are addressed in the actual arrangement rather than assuming all payments are recoverable. If an appearance or supervision requirement is missed, contact counsel promptly about the situation and the lawful steps needed to address it.

Before your next step

Your preparation checklist

  • Read every condition for every pending case.
  • Save the bond agreement and payment receipts.
  • Calendar court dates and supervision requirements separately.
  • Obtain written confirmation of any court-approved change.
